Budavári Palace-Royal Castle

Local name: Budavári Palota

The Royal Castle in Budapest is a complex of palace buildings on the Castle Hill. The castle buildings were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The castle houses the Hungarian National Gallery with a rich collection of Hungarian and European art, the Széchenyi State Library, which is the largest library in Hungary and the Historical Museum of Budapest, depicting the history of the city from the earliest times to the twentieth century.

Currently, existing buildings are mostly XXth-century reconstructions of pre-existing buildings with some modifications. The first castle was probably here in the 13th or 14th century, but it was completely destroyed during the Turkish invasion. Then in the eighteenth century, the Habsburgs built here a monumental palace in the Baroque style, designed by Johann Hölbling. It was largely destroyed during World War II and then reconstructed in the 1960s.
