Thasos is a port city and the capital of the island of the same name. There are nice beaches in its vicinity, and the city itself has many monuments and a well-developed network of restaurants, bars and taverns.

The modern city is located east of where there was a thriving port and trading center in antiquity. There are many ruins left of it, such as the agora, the remains of several temples and public buildings. Objects found during the excavations are on display at the Archaeological Museum. Next to it, you can see the church of St. Nicholas from the 9th century, and on the main square of the city there are remains of Roman mosaics and an early Christian basilica.

Thasos life is concentrated around the port. There are many taverns and restaurants here, and both cruise ships and ferries as well as fishing boats leave from the quay, which creates a nice, harbor atmosphere.

The city's surroundings are perfect for a seaside holiday. There are two picturesque beaches here, Vathi Beach and Saliara and Marmurowa Beaches. The last two are limited by green slopes falling to the sea and are covered with fine marble gravel. It comes from large deposits that have been mined in Thasos since antiquity, and the local quarries have been a source of marble for many temples in mainland Greece.
