Wernigerode is a small historic town at the foot of the Harz Mountains. It has a well-preserved Old Town with half-timbered houses, among which no two are alike. The fairy tale-like castle of Wernigerode is the city's biggest attraction.
The city was founded in the Middle Ages and was from the very beginning an important trade and craft center. The present-day buildings of the Old Town come mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. Several dozen half-timbered buildings standing in cobbled streets create a picturesque picture that looks like it was brought alive from centuries ago. The most famous of the houses here is Kleinste Haus, which is only 3 meters high and 3 storeys high. In microscopic rooms, there is now a museum presenting the life of the city's inhabitants in the past.
The most important attraction of Wernigerode is Wernigerode Castle. Its origins date back to the 13th century, but it owes its present appearance to the 19th century reconstruction. In several dozen rooms open to the public, you can see original period furniture and the collection of the Feudal Museum. The castle can be reached on foot or with the hiking Wernigeröder Schloßbahn.
The surroundings of the Harz mountains make Wernigerode a good starting point for hiking and biking tours. In the city itself, there is Agnes's Mountain, from which you can admire the panorama of the area. An interesting attraction is also the Harz Planetarium.
