Established in 1691, the library bears the name of its most generous patron, Duchess Anna Amalia (1739-1807). In the 20th century, it had around 1.5 million volumes, of which a significant part was completely or partially destroyed during the fire in 2002. Currently, the collection contains about 1 million books, including 2 thousand. medieval manuscripts.
