The late-classical palace was built on the order of the Prussian King Frederick William IV in the years 1858-1860. It is modeled on an Old Roman villa. Well-known Berlin architects worked on the design: Ludwig Persius, Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse, August Stüler and Ferdinand von Arnim. It belongs to the group of palaces and park complexes in Potsdam and Berlin inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.
