Pierrefonds Castle
Local name: Château de Pierrefonds
The castle at Pierrefonds is located on the southeastern edge of the Compiègne forest. It covers most of the features of defensive military architecture of the Middle Ages. There are also elements of 19th-century architecture. Today, the castle is open to visitors and there is an art gallery here.
In the 12th century, the first Romanesque castle was built here. In its history, it has repeatedly changed owners, was besieged and conquered, which resulted in destruction and reconstruction. The first of them took place two centuries after the uprising, the architect Jean le Noir was responsible for it. In the nineteenth century it underwent the last renovation. One of the owners of the castle was Napoleon.
An interesting fact about the Castle of Pierrefonds is the fact that it was often used as a movie scenery. Among other things, the themes of the film The Story of Joan of Arc, Iron Man and Immortal were filmed here. The castle also served as Camelot on the Merlin series and as a wizard school on the Wizards of Waverly Place series.
