Paris' Montaigne Avenue is an exclusive shopping street with many luxury shops of the best fashion brands, such as Valentino and Ralph Lauren, Prada, Versace, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Fendi. There are also top-class hotels, such as the Plaza Athénée hotel.
Avenue Montaigne was laid out in the 18th century on the site belonging to the sisters of the Congregation of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. It was originally called Widows' Avenue as single women came in search of adventure. The current name comes from Michel de Montaigne, writer of the French Renaissance.
In the 19th century, the street became famous for its shiny and colorful Mabille spheres. The avenue is 615 m long and 33 m wide and is planted with rows of elm trees on both sides. The Canadian Embassy is also located here. The famous actress Marlene Dietrich lived in an apartment on Montaigne Avenue for many years and died there in 1992.
