The theater was founded in 1820 as a place of training and seminars for students. Only one-act plays could practice here. Another theater director added longer plays to the repertoire, and in 1823 gas lighting was installed in the building. Over the years, the theater operated under various names, including Theater de Madame and Gymnese Dramatique.
The creators of the theater were eminent French writers such as Balzac, Emile Angier, Victorien Sordan, Octave Fenillet, and even Georges Sand - a writer known for her affair with Fryderyk Chopin.
