Church of the Holy Spirit

Local name: Église du Saint-Esprit

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Paris is a Roman Catholic church. The temple has a very large reinforced concrete dome, unusual for this period. The interior is lavishly decorated by contemporary artists from Ateliers d'Art Sacré. Its interior includes mosaics, stained glass, painting, sculptures and metalwork.

The significant increase in the number of people in the area made it necessary to build a church. The land was purchased in 1927 by Cardinal Dubois and the construction of the temple began a year later. It lasted until 1935. The construction of the church was carried out under the leadership of the architect Paul Tournon according to a plan inspired by Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

The Church of the Holy Spirit was built of reinforced concrete with a red brick cladding from Burgundy. The enormous dome, illuminated by a row of openings at the base, with a square nave that supported it, symbolized the union of divinity and earth. The dome is 22 meters in diameter and its top is 33 meters above the ground.
