Basilica of St. Clotilde

Local name: Basilique Sainte-Clotilde

Neo-Gothic basilica of St. Clotilde is one of five Catholic churches with the status of a basilica in Paris. The one-nave temple was built on the Latin cross plan. The facade is decorated with eight sculptures of saints and a rosette above the entrance. Among the furnishings of the interior there are the main altar, organs, paintings and a wooden pulpit.

Saint Basilica Klotylda was designed by the German architect from Cologne FC Gau. Construction works lasted in the years 1846 - 1857, after the death of Gau in 1853, the construction works were continued by Theodore Ballu. The church was consecrated by Cardinal Morlot. In 1896, Pope Leo XIII established the temple as a minor basilica.

Nineteenth-century glass manufacturer Thibaut is responsible for the stained glass. Painting decorations are made by Jules Eugène Lenepveu. Sculptures in the basilica were made by James Pradier, Francisque Joseph Duret, Jean-Baptiste Claude and Eugène Guillaume. The temple is 96 m long, and its towers and spiers reach a height of 70 m.
