The 14th-century belfry is the most characteristic historic building dominating the Douai panorama. It was erected for nearly a hundred years, and the work ended with the installation in 1491 of a carillon composed of nearly 50 bells. Victor Hugo wrote that this is the most beautiful belfry he has ever seen.
