The castle was built in the first half 11th century as a Cathar fortress. Located on a hill with a height of over 700 m, the stronghold was entered in the register of French monuments. The fortress offers a panorama of Cucugnam and the Aude and Pyrenees-Orientales regions. The castle is one of the 'five sons of Carcassone' - the largest castles of the former Cathar Country.
