Bonifacio is a town situated on a limestone cliff on the coast of Corsica. Its lower part is located over a narrow bay, while the upper one is a former citadel, which, visible on the cliff, looks beautiful, especially from the sea.
The lower part of Bonifacio is lively, full of restaurants and bars and clustered around the harbor. It is situated in a long, narrow bay and is the center of entertainment life. Boats and cruise ships depart from here for cruises along the coast, during which you can enter the grottos accessible only from the sea.
From the lower part, you can go up the stairs to the Upper Town and the citadel. There are also numerous viewpoints and a lighthouse on the cliff. Within the fortress, there is one of the highest bastions in France, from which you can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding area. There are also historic houses, fragments of walls, and at the end of the cape, a cemetery from the Napoleonic era.
The great attraction of Bonifacio is the Staircase of the King of Aragon. 187 steps carved into the rock lead down a precipitous cliff to a path carved in the rock. According to legend, the stairs were to be carved in one night by Aragonese soldiers who wanted to enter the city. In reality, however, they lead to drinking water wells. The stairs have high steps and are very steep.
