The citadel was built in the second half. 17th century. Considered a masterpiece of military architecture, the fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The citadel covers over 11 ha and is located on the top of Mont Saint-Étienne. Its interior houses, inter alia, three museums, a restaurant and a gift shop.
