Baume-les-Messieurs is a village situated at the foot of limestone cliffs in the Jura area. A great location, amazing views and the possibility of active tourism are combined here with beautiful, historic buildings, the heart of which is the medieval Benedictine monastery.
The origins of the Baume Monastery date back to the 6th century, when the first monks came here, but it was formally founded in its present location in the 9th century. It is now the biggest historical attraction of Baume-les-Messieurs. You can visit a Romanesque church from the 11th century, decorated with a Renaissance altar made in Flanders, and monastery buildings with cloisters and vaulted rooms.
The buildings in Baume-les-Messieurs mainly consist of stone, traditional houses and are very homogeneous. The town is at the forefront of the list of the most beautiful villages in France thanks to its wonderful blend of construction and its surroundings. The 200 m high limestone cliffs form an extension of the valley that looks like a circus. The village is surrounded by white walls covered with lush forests in the lower parts. The area is famous for its scenic spots, hiking and biking trails, and numerous recreational spots.
