Anglet is a holiday destination and one of the most popular resorts in the French Basque Country. It is known for its sandy beaches and many opportunities for active leisure.
The city has medieval roots and for centuries was a port center where wine and raisins were traded. Until the 18th century, there was also a dispute between Anglet and Bayonne over the monopoly of fishing on this stretch of the coast. The town had a diversified development, which can be seen here until today. Closer to the port, it is a typical urban development, with stone houses and narrow streets. However, a little further away, you can see traditional, single-story country houses with high attics, which were used to store hay.
In the 19th century, Anglet was quickly transformed into a seaside resort. Its location between the sea and forests has a positive effect on health, which has begun to be used in spa treatments. Several 19th-century guesthouses and villas come from this time.
Even today, the city is primarily of tourist importance. Both tourists and patients come here. 11 sandy beaches, including the most famous beach of the Little House of Love, are Anglet's biggest attraction. They are almost 5 km long and offer both places for quiet relaxation and excellent locations for surfers. The area around Anglet can be explored on foot and by bike. There are numerous walking routes and paths leading both along the coast and into the forests. There is also a well-known golf course that has gained international fame.
