Church of the Holy Cross

The Church of the Holy Cross in the city of Rauma is one of three churches built in Finland by the Franciscan Order and the only one that has survived to modern times. It is also the only building from the Middle Ages preserved in the city. The temple was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Church of the Holy Cross was built of gray stone between 1515-1520. In the following centuries, it was rebuilt, and in 1816 a church tower was added to it. As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that building materials from the ruins of the destroyed church of St. Trinity.

While visiting the church, you can see al secco wall paintings from the first half of the 16th century. the biblical history of salvation, the family tree of Jesus, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the figures of the Apostles.
