Museum Silkeborg

Local name: Museum Silkeborg

The Silkeborg Museum is housed in a historic building from the second half of the 18th century. It houses archaeological and historical exhibitions, mainly collections from the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Viking heyday.

The most valuable exhibits include the so-called The man from Tollund. These are the mummified corpse of an inhabitant of the Jutland Peninsula, dated to the 4th century. They were found in 1950 in a peat bog near Silkeborg. It is one of the best naturally mummified Iron Age bodies found in Denmark. Historical exhibitions focus on the history of Silkeborg Castle, the origins and development of the city itself, as well as the local glass and ceramics production.

The museum in Silkeborg includes two more institutions. The first is the Paper Mill Museum and the second is the historic Blicheregnen farm in the nearby village of Thorning.
