Zdar nad Sazavou Castle
Local name: Zámek Žďár nad Sázavou
The castle in Zdar nad Sazavou is an unusual building that connects the medieval Cistercian monastery with the baroque residence of the magnate Kinski family. At the beginning of the 21st century, a large part of it returned to the former owners. There is now a New Generation Museum, which through multimedia and interactive activities introduces the history of the entire facility. You can also see a collection of paintings from the collection of the Czech National Gallery, as well as former monastery buildings with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The castle and monastery complex is very extensive. It consists of several smaller parts, which are connected to a large extent. They are buildings from different periods. Above them are the church bell and a baroque clock tower. The originally Gothic church was rebuilt in the 17th century by Jan Santini. Currently, in the castle you can see an exhibition dedicated to this architect who created a characteristic Czech combination of Gothic and Baroque.
The second of the castle exhibitions presents Baroque works of art. There are paintings and sculptures of Czech artists who modeled on the works of Santini. The most important part of the complex is now a modern museum showing its history. Based on moving mock-ups, holograms, computer presentations and sound, it takes visitors into the world of a former Cistercian monastery. The last of the exhibitions presented is dedicated to the Kinski family and their presence in the Zdar castle.
