Upske peat bog
Local name: Úpské rašeliniště
The Upy peat bog is the largest of the Krkonoše bogs. It is located at an altitude of about 1,400 m above sea level on the slopes of Śnieżka. It is overgrown with tundra-like vegetation. The whole area is wet, with numerous ponds and marshy streams.
The peat bog was formed around 5-6 thousand years ago. It has an area of 72 hectares and its northern part is on the Polish side of the border. It covers the Upper and Biała Elbe spring area. Due to the specific conditions, several ice age plant species have survived. The peat bog is protected by a nature reserve. You can only walk along the tourist trail in its northern part, leading from the Dom Śląski hostel to the Luční bouda hostel.
