Plague Column

Local name: Morový sloup

The Plague Column, also called the Marian Column, is a Baroque obelisk erected as a vote of gratitude for saving the city's inhabitants from the 17th century epidemics. On the high pole stands the gilded figure of the Mother of God. The column is surrounded by saints.

In the 17th century, several waves of various epidemics swept through the Czech Republic and decimated the inhabitants of the country. After the plague subsided, votive monuments with statues of the Mother of God or the Holy Trinity began to be erected in many cities. In Pardubice, the column was put on the market in 1695. The sculpture of the Virgin Mary was made by an unknown Italian sculptor. In the years 1773-1777 the column was surrounded by a decorative balustrade. Sculptures of patrons of the Czech lands: saints Jan Nepomucen, Prokop, Józef, Ivan, Wojciech, Norbert, Wacław and Ludmiła were also placed on its pedestal and balustrade.
