Church of St. Bartholomew

Local name: Kostel sv. Bartoloměje

The church of Saint Bartholomew is the most important religious building of Pardubice. The Gothic parish church with Renaissance elements is visible from afar thanks to the soaring turret for the bell tower located on the roof of the nave. A valuable monument is the Renaissance portal and the altar with a picture of the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew.

The first mention of the church comes from the thirteenth century. Only the foundations of that Romanesque temple have survived. It was destroyed during the Hussite wars. In its place, a late-Gothic hall church was erected, covered with a rib vault. It consists of a clearly separated presbytery, nave and vestibule covered with separate roofs.

In the five-sided closed presbytery you can see the classical altar. A picture of Michał Wilmann from the end of the 17th century related to the church was placed in it. You get to the sacristy through the late Gothic portal decorated with Renaissance paintings.
