Zámecká garden
Local name: Zámecká zahrada
The castle gardens in the New Town on the Metuje River were founded in the 18th century. They consist of terraced parts designed in a French style. At the beginning of the 20th century, Dusan Jurkovič constructed a wooden covered bridge in the gardens, modeled on the traditional folk architecture of Wallachia.
Founded in the 18th century, the castle garden was very deserted at the end of the 19th century. Thanks to Dusan Jurkovič he received a second life. Individual terraces are connected by stairs and paths. Pre-existing late Baroque balustrades and dwarf figures symbolizing different sides of human nature were also used. French terraces with evenly trimmed hedges and flower beds have been re-arranged on the terraces. A view of the Metuji Valley opens from them.
Jurkovič also made plans for garden architecture. Under his direction, water was brought from Metuja to the garden fountain and a greenhouse with a heating system was built allowing for the cultivation of exotic species of plants. The most spectacular building, however, is the covered bridge that is the link between the terraces. It was made of dark wood and decorated with folk motifs. In the central part there is an extended room covered with a hip roof, high roof.
