Rotunda of St. George and Saint Adalbert

Local name: Rotunda svatého Jiří a svatého Vojtěcha

Saint George's Rotunda is a Romanesque building standing on the hill of Rip. It consists of a nave, an apse and a round tower with biforias. It probably comes from the 11th century. It is currently available to visitors.

It is not known exactly when and in what circumstances the rotunda was built. The first mentions of them appear in 1125, when Prince Sobiesław I, after defeating the army of Emperor Lotar III, founded its tower. Scientists conclude that the building is at least a few dozen years older and initially consisted only of a nave and altar apse. In the following centuries the church was rebuilt several times. It owes its present shape to reconstruction and romanization carried out in the 19th century.

It is a small building consisting of a nave on a circular plan and an apse added to it from the east. On the other side, a cylindrical tower adjoins the nave. All parts of the temple are covered with shingled domes. The interior is simple and raw. Small, narrow windows let in only faint streams of light. The interior is only open to visitors with a guide.
