Church of the Assumption

Local name: Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a former Jesuit monastery temple. The former convent building adjoins it. It is a baroque, one-nave building surrounded by side chapels. The two-tower facade is decorated with multiple pilasters and cornices. Inside, you can see a Baroque altar with a picture of the Assumption scene.

The church was built in 1654. Along with it, after demolishing the surrounding houses, also buildings of the Jesuit monastery were built. The temple was decorated with magnificent frescoes. Unfortunately, they were destroyed during the fire of 1762. The rebuilt interior of the temple today has the characteristics of late Baroque.

The main nave of the church is covered with a barrel vault. The walls are decorated with multiple cornices and stone floral decorations. Figures of saints were placed on the galleries surrounding the interior. The main altar was made after the fire of 1762. In its central part there is a painting by Kristian Noldinger depicting the Assumption. The altar is made of wood, but thanks to marbling it seems to be a stonemason's work. The picture is surrounded by columns and topped with a group of angels. Baroque altars are also found in side chapels dedicated mainly to the saints from the Jesuit order.
