Saint Lazarus Byzantine Museum
Local name: Saint Lazaros Byzantine Museum
The Byzantine Museum of Saint Lazarus (Agios Lazaros) is located at the church of St. Lazarus in Larnaca. The museum's collections include numerous icons, sacred art and liturgical items. Some of the exhibits come from the Byzantine period, and some are later. Most of the presented objects come from the 16th-20th century.
The museum exhibition is divided into five parts arranged in five rooms with a total area of 145 square meters. Among others, antique Bibles, liturgical clothing, metal vessels and candlesticks as well as wooden sculptures are exhibited here.
The history of the museum dates back to 1922, when it was founded on the initiative of Neoklis Kyriazis. The then exhibition consisted of objects collected by the church of St. Lazarus. In the 1960s, part of the collection was lost or destroyed, but the museum resumed its activity in 1990. In 2008, however, it was modernized and expanded.
