Island Šćedro
Local name: Otok Šćedro
The Croatian island of Šćedro is located in the Adriatic Sea, its area is less than 9 km². You can see the old "Old Stine" quarry, the remains of Illyrian mounds and the ruins of a former monastery.
The island has already been settled in ancient times. In the fourteenth century, it became public property, it was used for grazing cattle. In the 15th century, a monastery complex belonging to the Dominican order was erected on the island.
The monastery belonged to a hospital, where sailors were treated. He was abandoned by monks in the 18th century because of numerous attacks on the pirate waters.
Currently, only 30 people live on the island in the summer season. The villages of Mostir and Nestane located here have been abandoned by the inhabitants, they are used only for tourist services.
