The "source of life" (Zdenac života) in Zagreb is a fountain designed by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It depicts people at various stages of their development, ten naked figures surround the source - a symbol of life. Among the figures you can see a child, a young couple hugging and kissing, and an old man staring at the water (meaning the past).
It was made of bronze, the artist was inspired by the work of Rodin. All the characters look as if they are moving, their faces are presented realistically. The surface of the sculptures is smooth, reflects the light evenly, which causes no contrasts.
The sculpture was created in 1905, it was first exhibited four years later in a gallery in Zagreb. It was not until 1912 that one of the city squares was decorated with it. However, it is clear from the correspondence of Ivan Meštrović that he wanted the fountain to be located in Split.
