St. Mary's Church

Local name: Samostan sv. Marije

The cloister church of St. Maria's Zadar is famous for its rich collection of church art. There are over 200 objects in it, including silver reliquaries from the 12th century, monstrances, gothic sculptures, stone baptistery, 13th century icons, paintings by the Italian Renaissance painter - Vittore Carpaccio and antique, traditionally decorated liturgical vestments.

The church was built in the 11th century (the first temple in this place existed already at the beginning of the 10th century). It was rebuilt and modernized many times, its present shape is due to the works of the eighteenth century (from this time comes the Renaissance facade). The interior of the temple is decorated with beautiful baroque stuccos.

The church building was seriously damaged during the bombing during World War II. The destruction was not removed until the 1980s.
