The Roman Forum in Zadar was established on the recommendation of the first Roman emperor Octavian Augustus (two inscriptions in stone constitute evidence). The forum was the center of public life, at present only its fragments can be admired, including stairs, stone walkway and monumental columns. A significant part of the building was obstructed by the foundations of the church of St. Donat.
One of the surviving columns served as a pillory, people who were to be punished in public for theft, fraud and other crimes were attached to it. The remains of the sacrificial altar where animals were laid were also found in the forum.
The forum was destroyed as a result of the earthquake in the 6th century, the surrounding buildings collapsed, their remains were used to build other facilities, including churches.
The monument saw the light of day as a result of tragic events for the city and the country. It happened in 1944, during the Allied bombing, when urban buildings disappeared from the face of the earth.
