Barkajoli

Local name: Barkajoli

Barkajoli in Zadar is a traditional crossing connecting the two banks of the local port. Zadar residents and tourists can overcome this route (less than 72 meters) on board a rowing boat. It is one of the most characteristic attractions of the city, compared to the Venetian gondolas.

The barkajola tradition dates back to the fourteenth century, during this period the rowers received the city's official permission to charge a fee for transporting passengers and goods. The number of barkayola decreased over time, the greatest demand for this type of transport was recorded during World War I.

Currently, passengers are transported daily at designated times, regardless of the weather conditions (in winter the boats run shorter). This way, some residents shorten their way to work. Tourists from the boat can admire the port.
