The Ovcar Memorial Center commemorates the victims of the massacre known as the "Vukovar Massacre". The complex consists of two parts. The first is a monument in the form of a stone slab with a crack in the shape of a pigeon flying towards the sky, erected in the place of a mass grave. The second part is the building with a unique, modern exhibition.
In November 1991, during the Croatian-Serbian fighting, Yugoslav and Serbian forces captured Vukovar, and then massacred Croatian wounded and hospital personnel. Some of them were murdered on the spot, and some were taken to the nearby town of Ovcara. The prisoners were shot and the bodies were thrown into a mass grave, which was found a year later by a UN mission.
In the main hall of the Ovcar Memorial Center you can see photos of the victims and their names. In the symbolic gutters under the walls, memorabilia of the murdered, donated by their families or removed from the mass grave were distributed.
