Crkva Gospe od Pojišana, or the Church of Our Lady of Pojišan, also known as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a sanctuary known throughout Croatia. In the main altar of the temple there is a painting of Our Lady of Pojišan, famous for miracles, dated to the end of the fourteenth century. Every year on August 15 tens of thousands of faithful take part in the solemn procession of the painting.
The church existing today was built on the site of a much older and smaller temple, which was mentioned in 1216. It is believed that the first chapel was built on the site of today's church as early as the 9th century. This is demonstrated by the remains of stone entablements and fragments of the altar found during the last reconstruction, which are currently in the collections of the Archaeological Museum in Split.
Crkva Gospe received its current form from Pojišan in 1771, when it was enlarged and thoroughly rebuilt. In 1782, the construction of the belfry was completed, and in 1794 a sumptuous altar made of white marble was built.
