Tunelri is a 330-meter military tunnel from World War II, which was opened to the public in 2017. It was built by the Italian army in 1939-1942 to protect civilians against attacks by Allied air force. The underground corridor stretches under the old town of Rijeka - from the Cathedral of St. Welcome to the Primary School at ul. Dolac. This is the first military tunnel in Croatia dedicated to the needs of tourist traffic.
The tunnel is about 2.5 m high, 4 m wide and descends to 10 m in some places. Before opening for sightseeing, new lighting was installed in the tunnel, general cleaning was carried out, and the bottom was sprinkled with gravel. All together, it cost 300,000 kuna (about EUR 40,000).
Tunelri not only provides a thrill, but also a good and fast way of communication. In warm months, it offers the possibility of refreshment while exploring the city.
