Prirodoslovni Muzej is a museum of natural history - the first and oldest museum facility in Rijeka. The collection began to be collected as early as the nineteenth century, the museum in its present form has been operating since 1946. It has about 100,000 collections. exhibits divided into nearly 30 sections, among which collections of minerals, sponges and algae are particularly important and rich.
In the 21st century, the museum is enriched with multimedia forms of presentation and new exhibitions, also addressed to children, such as the Aquarium-Multimedia Center. Since 2004, a permanent exhibition devoted to Rijeka's birds and mammals can be seen. A botanical garden was created next to the museum.
The official date of establishing the museum is assumed on May 16, 1876, when the Austrian naturalist Josef Roman Lorenz sent the mayor of Rijeka a project to establish the institution. Her concept was modeled on the Vienna Naturhistoriches Museum, considered then one of the most modern museums in the world.
