Franciscan monastery Trsat

Local name: Franjevački samostan Trsat

Franciscan Monastery is a 15th-century Franciscan monastery on the Trsat hill (139 m above sea level) in Rijeka. The order was brought to Rijeka to spread the cult of the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary. The painting was a gift from Pope Urban V. His authorship is ascribed to Saint. Łukasz Ewangeliście. Currently, the original of the work is in the monastery treasury.

The monastery and church of Our Lady of Trsat is one complex of sacred buildings, to which a stone staircase, 561 degrees leads - the most pious pilgrims climb them on their knees. Legend has it that the place of today's monastery was the house of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Józef, who was moved from the Holy Land. This was to be done on the orders of Prince Nikola IV Frankopan, who in 1294 gave the Holy House to the Pope's estate in Loreto.

In front of the sanctuary there is a magnificent monument depicting a kneeling man facing the church of Pope John Paul II. The monument by László Szalai was unveiled two years after the papal pilgrimage to Croatia in 2003.
