Crkva Uznesenja Bdm, or the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in the early Middle Ages on the foundations of buildings from the time of the Roman Empire. It was formerly the main temple of Rijeka, hence it is still called Vela Crikva (Great Church). Under the church floor, at a depth of about 2.5 m, there are 75 graves. The stone slabs removed from them were built into the outer north wall of the church.
The graves were below floor level during the first reconstruction of the church, which took place in 1442. The present shape of the temple is due to renovation from 1695. Inside the church there are eight chapels with eighteenth-century altars made of multi-colored marble. Noteworthy are baroque stucco and frescoes by Augusto Pagliarini.
In front of the church there is a square tower of gray stone - the church belfry. By the inhabitants of Rijeka, it is called the "leaning tower" because according to measurements from 1920, its top is tilted from the vertical by 40 cm.
