Bridge of Croatian Defenders from Homeland War, is a 5.5 m wide and 48 m long pedestrian bridge over the port channel. The building opened in 2001 has won numerous awards in architectural competitions. It is currently the site of official celebrations and one of Rijeka's tourist attractions.
The bearing surface of the bridge is a thin, only 65-centimeter plate of corrugated sheets, made of aluminum and magnesium alloy. The side rails made of glass are finished with wooden handrails. The structure, weighing 150 tons, was assembled at the local port and then transported on barges to the destination.
The channel, over which the bridge is suspended, separates the former port from the older, historic part of the city. From the port side, the bridge is closed with two flat, reinforced concrete pillars 7.5 m high, with a special surface for laying flowers and lighting candles. The total cost of building the bridge was EUR 1.5 million.
