Safari Park

Local name: Safari park

A safari park, also sometimes called a zoo, is located in the northern part of the island of Veliki Brijun. The place was opened in 1978, when the island served as the summer residence of Josip Broż Tito. Many animals simply served as official diplomatic gifts. Currently, you can see many rare breeds of domestic animals - e.g. Istrian cattle and sheep, Dalmatian donkeys and goats. There are also many exotic species - fallow deer, mouflons, elephants, camels, llamas, antelopes, zebras, ostriches and flamingos.

Among the formerly famous guests here were, among others Fidel Castro, Elizabeth II, Richard Burton and Sophia Loren. Pictures documenting the visits of famous guests are on the island in a museum dedicated to the dictator. Tito died in 1980, and in 1983 the entire archipelago was declared a national park. In 1991, Safari Park was opened to the public. Today it is a closed area extending over an area of over 9 hectares.
