Byzantine Castrum

Local name: Bizantski Kastrum

One of the many attractions of the Brijuni National Park is the Byzantine Castrum - a unique architectural layout on the entire Croatian coast. It is a huge complex of buildings spread over an area of about 1 ha. Side by side are monuments from the times of the Roman Empire, Byzantium, the late Middle Ages and the time of the Venetian Duchy. The small town was inhabited until the 16th century, which is why the foundations and constructions of buildings have survived to our times in a fairly good condition.

The oldest villa discovered in the Castrum area dates from around the first century before Christ. You can also admire fragments of the early Christian basilica, the former Benedictine abbey, the medieval defensive tower, as well as the Venetian castle of the sixteenth century, which has been a museum since 1955. The exhibition deals with archeology and natural history, and talks about the period of Marshal Tito's stay on the islands.
