In Croatia you can find olive trees that "remember" Roman times. Considered one of the oldest grows in the Brijuni National Park. Specialist coal analysis carried out on a piece of trunk determined that the olive is about 1600 years old and has been growing here in the 4th century. The research was carried out by the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb in the 1960s.
The tree miraculously survived the storm in the 1970s. Hit by lightning burst. The so-called "wounds" were flooded with concrete (at that time it was a very common method of conservation in fruit-growing). Today, the oldest olive tree in Istria is 6 meters high, and its crown span reaches 22 meters.
On average, 30 kg of olives are harvested each year. This gives about 4 kg of extra virgin olive oil. It is of very good quality (its composition was tested in the laboratory of the Institute of Public Health in Pula).
