The Sokol Fortress, also called Sokol-Grad, is the largest fortification in southern Dalmatia. The renovated monument attracts visitors with its location on a 25-meter cliff, a magnificent panorama of the Konavle region and interesting architecture. The fortress also has a museum where you can see exhibits found during archeological works, an exhibition presenting the lives of former residents, including weapons and jewelry, as well as contemporary works of local craftsmen.
Sokol Fortress was built in the Middle Ages on the remains of a stronghold probably still existing in the times of Ancient Rome. She was to protect people living in Cavtat. In the second half of the 17th century, this area was hit by a strong earthquake, which caused severe damage that the fort was abandoned by the crew. It was not until 1966 that the decaying building was restored by the Association of Friends of the Monuments of Dubrovnik.
