The mighty mountain range is located on the outskirts of Sofia. Its highest peak is Czarny Wierch, which is 2,290 m above sea level and is the fourth highest peak in the country. Numerous hiking trails have been marked out on its slopes. There are over a dozen shelters and over 40 smaller mountain huts.
Much of the massif is a national park under protection. Due to the great diversity of the terrain, a very rich flora appears here. In total, there are over 1500 species of plants, 500 species of fungi and over 500 species of mosses and lichens, including endemic species.
The mountains are home to deer, roe deer, wild boar, wolves and 11 species of bats. There are also over 230 species of birds, including eagles, spotted eagles, hawks, owls and woodpeckers.
