Monument to the Tsar Liberator

Local name: Паметник „Цар Освободител“

The neoclassical monument was erected in 1907 as a token of gratitude by the Bulgarian people to the Russian Tsar Alexander II for the liberation of the country from Ottoman rule. It is also a symbol of the freedom and independence of Bulgaria. Its author was the Florentine sculptor Arnaldo Jockey.

The monument consists of a pedestal, a central part decorated with a bas-relief and a 4.5-meter horse figure depicting Alexander II. The whole thing is 12 m high. The statue of the tsar was made of bronze, while the pedestal and the central part were made of black polished granite.

The main relief shows the figures of 30 military commanders, statesmen and other distinguished public figures. Three smaller bas-reliefs depict the most important events of the war for independence of the country - the battle of the Old Farm, the signing of the peace treaty and the convening of the Legislative Assembly.
