The Orthodox monastery was founded in the 12th century during the Second Bulgarian State. During the Ottoman occupation, the monastery was destroyed and plundered twice. It took place in the 14th and 17th centuries. The present building was built in 1845. Only one of the original three domes has survived.
There is an archaeological and historical museum in the monastery. You can see, among others, Neolithic exhibits from nearby archaeological sites. The oldest traces of human presence in this area come from the Stone Age. There is also an exhibition on the history of the monastery in the museum.
The monastery played an important role in the preparations for the April Uprising in 1876. A 9-day battle with Turkish troops was fought there. The monastery was then destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1877 and a monument was erected to the fallen insurgents.
