Tower of St. Rumbold
Local name: Sint-Romboutstoren
The belfry is 97 m high. At its top there is a viewpoint from which you can observe the city panorama. Stairs consisting of over 500 steps lead to it. In 1999, the tower was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. By the French architect, Vaubanie was also called the "eighth wonder of the world".
The tower consists of 7 levels. There are two carillons from the 15th and 16th centuries, each with 49 bells. The most famous are: "Salwator" weighing nearly 9 tons and "Jehsus" dated 1640.
Construction of the belfry began in 1452. Due to financial and increasing religious conflicts, it was interrupted in 1520. The original plans according to which it was to be topped with a spire reaching 167 m in height were abandoned. According to legend, the foundations of the tower were built on the skin of sheep or cows.
