The thirteenth-century gate is a remnant of the nonexistent defensive walls of the city. It was the only one to avoid demolition when in 1806, at Napoleon's order, all fortifications in Mechelen were demolished. Currently, the gate is the seat of the city museum - you can see an exhibition of local archaeological finds here.
