Villa Empain

Local name: Villa Empain

The historic Art Deco residence was built in 1930-34 according to the design of the Swiss architect Michele Polak. It currently houses the Center of Art and Dialogue between East and West cultures. Art exhibitions, concerts, symposia and conferences regularly take place here.

The facade of the residence is covered with polished granite on each side. On one side, there is a swimming pool surrounded by a pergola. The interior was decorated with a wealth of materials, including glass, bronze and various varieties of marble and wood, such as rosewood, walnut and Venezuelan manila.

The building was built for Baron Louis Empain. Initially, it was to serve as a private villa, but as early as 1937 the owner handed it over to the state authorities as a museum. After World War II, the Belgian Minister Paul-Henri Spaak transferred the residence to the authorities of the USSR, which returned it only in the 1960s.
