Japanese Tower

Local name: Tour Japonaise

The Far East Museum consists of three buildings - the Japanese Tower, the Chinese Pavilion and the Museum of Japanese Art. In the red tower, modeled on pagodas, Japanese porcelain, sculptures and glass paintings were displayed. It is surrounded by a small garden with Far Eastern trees and shrubs that breathes balance and peace.

After the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, King Leopold II decided that the park next to his palace was decorated with buildings characteristic of the Far East architecture. The pagoda was founded in 1905 and is the work of the French architect Alexander Marcel. The building, 40 meters high, was assembled without nails, according to traditional Japanese techniques. It was made of European materials, but the exterior ornaments largely come from Yokohama, Tokyo and Shanghai.

The building was initially erected only for decorative functions, now it is used as a place for the presentation of Japanese porcelain and art. It is located within the guarded royal estate in Laeken, which is why access to the interior is only possible thanks to an underground tunnel leading from a nearby park.
