Church of Our Lady of Laeken

Local name: Église Notre-Dame de Laeken

The church is an extremely valuable object appearing on the map of Brussels. It is in this temple that the crypt is located, in which members of the royal family are buried. The object itself is located near the castle, which to this day serves as the official residence of the King and Queen of Belgium.

The church was commissioned by the ruler Leopold I, who thus fulfilled the last will of his wife. Queen Luise - Marie wanted to be buried in the Laeken district after her death. In 1854, work began on the construction of the temple, which was designed by a young architect - Fridrich von Schmidt. For financial reasons, construction was not completed until 1907.

The church has a royal chapel, which is no longer used for religious purposes. It now houses an exhibition dedicated to the work and life of Cardinal Josef-Leon Cardijn, who was the inspiration for Christian trade unions. Next to the church there is a cemetery where important persons of the nineteenth century were buried.
